MySpace Developer Platform launching on February 5th

Programmers will next week be able to dig deeper into MySpace, one of the world's largest social networking sites.

On February 5th, MySpace will launch its MySpace Developer Program, allowing programmers access to documentation and API tools that will aid developers in creating applications and addons for the hugely popular website. The program, rolling out initially in 28 different countries, will adhere to Google's OpenSocial industry-wide standards.

The decision to open MySpace to external developers came last October, following rival Facebook's decision to open itself to developers last May.

Facebook now features some 15,000 applications ranging from games to music tools. MySpace hopes its Developer Program will bring similar growth to its site, and plans to offer revenue to developers. Though revenue details are sketchy at present, we expect a formal announcement to accompany the program's launch on Tuesday.

Newly appointed chief operating officer at MySpace, Amit Kapur said:

"This gives developers deeper access to our community through APIs so they'll be able to build richer applications and also gives them an opportunity to build their business directly on MySpace. It's a natural step in the evolution of how we've worked with third party developers".

You can pre-register for the MySpace Developer Platform at developer.myspace.com.
