Share your 3G Internet connection over WLAN to any compatible WLAN device

So you've got unlimited data via 3G on your Symbian-based Smartphone. That's all well and good, but what if you wanted to utilise that internet connection on other devices?

Joikusoft's new software solution, JoikuSpot, allows you to do just that. The free mobile software turns a Symbian S60 Smartphone into a Wi-Fi Hotspot, sharing a 3G Internet connection with any compatible WLAN device such as a laptop. Acting as an internet gateway to external WLAN devices, JoikuSpot will even allow you to connect multiple devices at once.

According to Joikusoft founder and CEO, Mr. Lasse Maki, "Internet should be easily and cost-efficiently accessible everywhere, and Joikusoft aims to enable that with the JoikuSpot innovation."

JoikuSpot will certainly help achieve more accessible internet, but we'd highly recommend subscribing to an unlimited data plan from your network provider if you want it to remain cost-effective.

Available to download now from Joiku.com, JoikuSpot is currently in beta form and a small handful of known issues are already being worked on. If you do give the free software a whirl, be aware that it isn't yet a final product and may not work seamlessly. The final release is expected in the second half of 2008.

JoikuSpot's key features are listed as:

  • Sharing the phone’s 3G internet connection over WLAN to external devices
  • HTTP and HTTPS protocol support
  • Routing of the connection to pre-defined homepage (www.joikuspot.com)
  • Showing the status of established connections via JoikuSpot
  • Discovery of the open JoikuSpot by external WLAN devices
  • Symbian v3 OS support
  • 3G/EDGE support

Alas, my N73 doesn't have a WiFi module.

However, my router does support N7x phones as a 3G failover connection :D

Great piece of software though, if the concept is anything to go by.
Shame there isn't a WinMobile version. I could actually use that with my Kaiser :)
