When Sony unveiled its high-tech glass speaker prototype last year, we thought the concept was pretty cool.
We didn't, however, expect it to become a retail product. Sony, clearly, has other plans, and will now be offering the speaker, dubbed the Sountina, as early as June 20th in Japan.
As you might have guessed, a super-sleek speaker that emits sound at 360 degrees doesn't come cheap, it'll cost ¥1,000,000 (approximately £5,000).
The speaker stands at about 6ft tall and features a 13cm subwoofer, 7cm midrange speaker and a tweeter made of organic glass. It'll provide RCA, coaxial and optical inputs, as well as a frequency response of 50Hz - 20,000Hz.
There's even a set of LEDs at the base of the glass tube to give it that light sabre feel. At launch, it'll be sold in Japan only, but international availability will follow later this year.
No word on the power output of the speaker, but here's a promo video, complete with heart-racing music which we hope isn't an indicator of what the speaker can do:
