Good news, folks. Remember that 6x Blu-ray writer from Hitachi that we found at COMPUTEX earlier this month? Well, there's now 6x media to go with it.

Panasonic today announced the world's first 6x Blu-ray discs, but they'll be launching next month in Japan only.

The new single-sided discs, which will be available in both 25GiB and 50GiB capacities, provide a maximum data transfer speed of 216MiB/s. They offer support for Blu-ray format version 1.3 and will launch in Japan at a price of $15 and $37, respectively.

There's no news on UK availability yet, but 6x writers and 6x media remain a pricey prospect.

Panasonic states that it introduced 1x Blu-ray discs in 2004, 2x in 2006, 4x in 2007 and now 6x in 2008. By that reckoning, we'll be feasting our eyes on 20x Blu-ray discs in 2015.

Anyone else noticed that the 6x media is Japan only and the 6x LG burner is US only for the moment?
