The UK's official emergency telephone number, 999, should only be used in an emergency, right?

Unfortunately, the emergency services have long suffered from hoax callers wasting valuable time and resources. Avon and Somerset police has had to deal with calls that are anything but emergencies, and has decided to do something about it.

In an effort to highlight those who are clearly misusing the 999 facility, Avon and Somerset police has published a selection of calls to YouTube, and some of them defy belief:

The Avon and Somerset police website states:

"These calls may seem amusing but the callers are clearly misusing the 999 facility. Those who dial 999 when it is not an emergency could be preventing a genuine emergency call being answered. These include where a person has been seriously hurt, or about to be seriously hurt, and situations which require immediate police action."

If you'd like to hear more, including a male caller dialling 999 to complain about the lack of buses in Crow Lane, head on over to the Avon and Somset Police website.

Personally I think there should be a panic number to call e.g. 333 Then if you're wife has left you without any food to eat you can be comforted by someone who can say “maybe, just maybe there was a reason for it”.
Also how many grans are using Youtube. they are never going to get the message.

They need to do a proper TV/Radio advertising campaign. Idiot calls 999 “i've lost my keys” while someone else is trying to call 999 and cant get through but they're trapped in a building on fire. Really hammer it home to people.
They need a non-emergency number to call thats known and is the same nationwide. Police cars now show non-emergency numbers on them, but they are just standard numbers and not easy to remember.

A new number e.g. 777 could be introduced and just act as a call routing centre for non-emergency situations.
