This Thursday, October 2nd, Nokia will finally unveil its touch-capable rival to Apple's hugely popular iPhone. The launch will take place at an analyst and media event in London, state sources at Reuters.

The long-awaited handset - code-named "Tube" and thought to be formally labelled as the Nokia 5800 - has been the root of speculation for many months. It will become the first mainstream touch-capable device to emerge from the world's largest manufacturer of mobile telephones, and is thought to offer a low-cost alternative to the Apple iPhone.

A 3.2in touchscreen, 3.2 megapixel camera, GPS and Symbian's S60 operating system are just a few of the rumoured features. With Nokia's London-exclusive N96 launch having passed relatively quietly last week, it will be hoping that its Tube creates more of a stir.

With touchscreen devices having soared in popularity, it was only a matter of time before Nokia arrived on the scene. The real question is, will its user interface be able to provide a silky-smooth experience to rival that of the iPhone? Looks like we'll find out Thursday.
