Sky TV has been demonstrating the delivery of 3D broadcasts and claims the technology could be the next step up from HD.

Throughout 2009, the broadcaster has been filming a series of sporting events using specialised 3D cameras. In a technical demonstration, it then showed the footage to members of the press in 3D, using a standard Sky+HD receiver, 3D glasses and a 3D-ready TV.

On show were various sporting moments, including a recent Ricky Hatton fight, and initial impressions cite the footage as impressive. Despite the use of specialised 3D cameras, Sky states that the cost to broadcasters is minimal as the technology is able to make use of recently-introduced infrastructure for HD.

Although potentially feasible for broadcasters, the technology won't come cheap to consumers. With many having upgraded to HD-ready televisions, viewers may be facing a further upgrade to a 3D-ready set should Sky's 3D broadcasts become mainstream anytime soon.

Sky has, however, confirmed that the demonstration is nothing more than a technology showcase, and there are currently no plans to productise 3D broadcasts. Though, with Hollywood set to invest heavily in 3D movies in the coming year, is the next football world cup in 3D a stretch of the imagination?
