Following long spells of testing and a year of development, Yahoo has finally unveiled its revamped home page.

The page, ranked as one of the most visited web sites in the world, first arrived at Yahoo.com in 1995 and today attracts in excess of 500 million visitors each month.

However, despite its position as one of the leading web portals, Yahoo has in recent years faced increasing competition from the likes of Google, Facebook, MySpace and Twitter - all of which are actively vying to become the first port of call for hundreds of millions of web users.

Hoping to counter the threat, Yahoo's redesign sports a customisable format that allows users to alter the page to suit their needs. Arguably the most important new feature is Yahoo's "My Favourites", a tool that allows users to implement third-party applications into their home page. Over 60 choices are currently available, providing third-party content from the likes of Google, Facebook or the BBC.

Yahoo's goal is to create a one-stop destination for web users - a goal that's highlighted by the new site's ability to display status updates from popular destinations such as Twitter and Facebook.

The new home page, available currently via preview URL yahoo.com/trynew, is scheduled to launch in the US today and in Europe and Asia later this year.
