Amazon has made available a beta version of its Kindle for PC software application. The freeware program, unveiled last month and now available to download from Amazon.com, provides PC users with access to the retailer's Kindle marketplace, allowing for e-book reader functionality without the need for a standalone Kindle device.

Kindle for PC currently boasts a library of more than 360,000 books, but Amazon warns that newspapers, magazines, and blogs are not currently available via its desktop application, and adds that non-U.S. customers may find that book availability can vary.

The software is available for Microsoft's Windows 7, Windows Vista and Windows XP operating systems, with Amazon suggesting that a Mac version is "coming soon".

Owners of a Kindle reader will also welcome the inclusion of Amazon Whispersync technology - allowing consumers with multiple devices to easily pick up reading where they left off.

Unfortunately, the Kindle for PC application isn't able to replicate one of Kindle's key features - an e-Ink display that promises to "look and read like real paper". Can Kindle for PC deliver a comfortable reading experience? Let us know what you think in the HEXUS.community forums.
