ASUS might not be a name you regularly associate with PC speakers, but perhaps proving that there's nothing the Taiwanese giant can't manufacture, it has today introduced a solution that it claims is the world's most compact five-channel speaker.

Dubbed the ASUS Cine5 PC speaker, this here virtual-surround solution promises to deliver "realistic and dynamic surround sound to satisfy consummate gamers and personal entertainment users".

Measuring 373mm x 100mm x 100mm, ASUS reckons the compact solution is ideal for users with limited space - referring specifically to student rooms.

The unit features simple 3.5mm jacks for multi-channel input, and uses ASUS' patented "Embracing Sound Theatre HD" technology to simulate a full surround experience. It isn't gong to be as fulfilling as a true 5.1 speaker kit, but it is a whole lot simpler to use, and ASUS has opted to reassure gamers by stating that "Cine5 provides precise sound location that improves shooting accuracy and heightens gaming thrills".

Good news for music lovers, too, as the Cine5 will up mix any 2.0 source to virtual 5-channel audio.

It's small enough to fit under most monitors, offers 28W of maximum power output, and features a bass reflex port that should provide a decent thud when needed. A headphone socket is present, and the giant dial resting top centre controls volume and doubles as a mute button.

Looks like a tidy little solution, we reckon, but there's no mention of pricing yet.
