LG has attempted to lower the entry point for 3D TVs with the introduction of a passive 47in set.

The display, dubbed the LD950, uses cheaper passive 3D technology and is expected to become available to UK consumers in May priced between £1,500 and £2,500, making it potentially one of the most affordable big-screen 3D solutions.

Using passive technology, LG's display will use some form of overlaying filter designed to tweak the vibration of light emitted from an image's alternate lines. Picked up by polarised glasses, the effect results in half of the image being captured by the left eye and half by the right, creating a 3D effect.

Although deemed not to be as visually impressive as active-shutter technology, LG's LD950 has the benefit of being watchable through cheap polarised glasses - of which four will be bundled with the set. The glasses are practically identical to those used in current 3D cinemas.

In addition to its passive 3D functionality, the LD950 offers a full-HD 1080p resolution, 200Hz TruMotion, a USB port for playback of media on external storage devices, and four HDMI 1.4 ports - allowing the set to make full use of the Blu-ray 3D specification.
