Intro & Apple hype

Over at arstechnica.com, you'll find one of the first in-depth reviews of the much-hyped RAW-image-handling program Aperture. There, reviewer Dave Girard does rather more than just deflate most of Apple's claims for the app.

"At this stage Aperture is a big, expensive misfire and considering the hefty price tag, I can't think of a reason to recommend it"

Aperture V1.0, seemingly, is neither fast nor efficient. Worse, its output quality appears to be decidedly unprofessional and unlikely to appeal to its intended audience – folk who earn their living as photographers.

To better understand the Apple-generated hype, check out this October 19 press release, containing classic lines such as:

* Aperture is to professional photography what Final Cut Pro is to filmmaking
* RAW images can be retouched with stunning results using a suite of adjustment tools designed especially for photographers
* The first all-in-one post production tool that provides everything photographers need after the shoot
* Offers an advanced and incredibly fast RAW workflow that makes working with a camera’s RAW images as easy as JPEG.
* Built from the ground up for pros
* Features powerful compare and select tools and nondestructive image processing
* An innovative post production tool that revolutionises the pro photo workflow from compare and select to retouching to output
