Ten internet service providers have been ordered to hand over personal details of 150 UK customers accused of illegally sharing software, according to the BBC.

The ruling is said to follow a year-long undercover operation by the Federation Against Software Theft (FAST) and involve a number of big ISPs including BT, NTL, Telewest and Tiscali.

Once it has the details of the alleged software-sharers, FAST will involve police and the Crown Prosecution Service. Resulting court action could mean file-shares facing two-years in jail and/or unlimited fines. Apparently, too, this is merely the first stage of an ongoing strategy that FAST has for combating software piracy.
