Matrox, we can exclusively reveal, is getting ready to announce the launch of a lower-cost version of its upmarket, HD-capable video editing card, the Axio.

Our source? One of the demonstrators at VideoForum who was keen to impress on a potential volume-buyer from the educational sector that it makes sense to hold out for a more affordable version of Axio, rather than opting now for a competing and cheaper product. The demonstrator's exact words? "Wait for a fortnight and there will be something [about this] on the web."

But, you ask, "Do I want the lite version and could I afford it?". In our view, almost certainly not. We reckon you're going to have to hand over close to £4K (including VAT) and shouldn't expect back a whole lot of change. And that £4K, we suspect, won't buy you any video-editing software or cover the extra you may have to pay for having the whole thing built into a PC put together and sold to you by a Matrox-accredited video-editing-sytem builder - assuming Matrox doesn't change its policy especially for the lite version.

So, why should you care? Well, if a lite version of Axio is coming soon - though, of course, an announcement doesn't guarantee instant availability - then a lite lite version intended for editing HDV consumer high-def video, rather than pro HD, shouldn't be a long way behind.

Although the company has never even made clear in what year an HDV product will arrive, you can be sure it's a massive priority on Matrox's roadmap as a result of the SD-only RT.X100 card losing so much business to Canopus's HDV/SD-capable EDIUS NX, something that can have only accelerated now that Canopus's offering is available in a PCIe version as well as PCI.

Remember. You heard it here first.
