Memory module manufacturer Corsair continue their series of build reports with a look at constructing a modern (and expensive) HTPC, equipped for TV viewing and recording.
In the report-cum-guide, they start by going through the components they've bought, how much they cost, and why they bought them. Some of the components are a bit OTT, like the sound card, a Creative X-Fi Xtreme Music:
It's served us well in past system builds and provides very decent quality 7.1 surround. This specific box will be used for stereo, merely 2 channel audio, unfortunately, as the room we're installing it in doesn't quite have the space for 8 speakers.
Still, if you can afford it, why not? After choosing the hardware they (obviously) built the system, taking lots of photos on the way. Following that is the software setup, in this case pure and simple Windows Media Center Edition 2005.
The guide will prove useful for those looking to put together an HTPC, particularly if they've not done much PC building, or don't really know what they need. Corsair also highlight other important issues in the HTPC construction process, such as WAF (wife acceptance factor), so hats off to them for some 'in-depth' report writing.
