Apple has made available an iPod volume-control software update that looks to be a direct response to its on-going hearing-loss legal suit - a case that we think has little merit.
The software update is said to let iPod users "easily set their own personal maximum volume limit". It's also reckoned to give "parents the ability to set a maximum volume limit on their child’s iPod and lock it with a combination code" and is said to work with "any headphone or accessory plugged into the iPod headphone jack as well as the iPod Radio Remote".
However, it would appear only to provide volume limiting for just two types of newer iPod - the nano and recently-launch video-capable fifth-generation model - though whether such a change is possible in software with other iPods, we simply don't know.
The 1.1.1 update is available now from http://www.apple.com/ipod/download and comes in versions for Windows (a 45.4MB download) and Mac (27.6MB).
In each case, the download (dated March 23) contains iPod software 1.1.1 for nano and video iPods, plus software for all other iPods that is the same as was offered in the iPod Updater of Jan 10, 2006.
