The BBC and ITV are looking for 450 volunteers in London willing to test high-definition terrestrial broadcasts free for six months. The catch? Participants need HD-ready TV sets.

Big attraction looks to be World Cup football - all BBC and ITV matches will be included in the test - but Channel 4 and Channel Five will be providing packages of other shows, too. We'd guess that there will be some Wimbledon tennis from the BBC given that - like World Cup football - some matches are going to be included in the BBC's satellite HD trials

According to a BBC news report, broadcasters have chosen London because low-power HD signals on non-commercial frequencies will be able to reach many homes without interfering with existing channels.

Apply if you're interested at http://www.bbc.co.uk/digital. For more about the BBC's various HD trials, check out the corporation's HDTV and digital home pages.

I know that they'd wanted to let YOU have an HD TV set but were worried that they'd end up having to give away another 449 sets and so decided not to make an exception.

Dammit. Why cant they do it near me.
