Sky Sports will be broadcasting the next Ryder Cup live in high definition when Europe defends the trophy against the USA in Ireland from September 22 to 24 (Fri-Sun).

The 36th Ryder Cup will be played at the K Club in County Kildare and broadcast exclusively live on Sky Sports 1 and Sky Sports HD. Commenting on the news, David Tippett, Sky's executive producer of golf, said,

"HD will not only bring viewers closer to what is happening on the course: the players’ emotions, the atmosphere of the galleries, the contours of the greens, but also it will bring out the unique landscape of the K Club and bring it to life."

More immediately, Sky will be providing HD coverage of the World Cup football that kicks off on Friday - showing all of the BBC's matches in high-def. However, our HEXUS.headline suggests that anyone signing up for HD right now will not get kit installed in time for the big tournament because Sky has hit supply problems.

Telewest is offering a rival HD service by cable and you're likely to have more luck there if you happen to live in an area covered by the company - who will be showing not just the BBC's matches in HD but also ITV's as well. Check out this HEXUS.headline.

By the time that the new football season kicks off in August, though, Sky should have sorted out supply issues and will have a strong HD footie offering - live HD coverage from the Barclays Premiership, Coca-Cola League and Carling Cup. There will also be live rugby union in HD from the Guinness Premiership.

This summer, live coverage of England’s International npower Tests, the NatWest One-Day internationals and county cricket will also be available from Sky in HD.

To receive Sky HD, you'll need an HD-compatible TV set, a Sky HD receiver/recorder and the relevant subscriptions. Find out more on the Sky HD home page or call 08705 800 874.

Meaow!

HDTV golf, man I can hardly contain my excitment. Now I'll be able to see every blade of grass and every middle aged man sweating away in huge detail.

Nail & head :)

Now we can count every grey hair on Tiger's head and see the crow-feet creases next to his eye's with more clarity.
Wow we will be able to see the dimples on the golf ball…

Golf seems such an impressive waste of HD to me…
