The hugely popular MySpace.Com
social-networking site is still down. It looks to have been
down since Saturday and there's no clear sign of when it will
be live again. On the upside, there's a rather good game of PacMan to
play on the site while things are being sorted!
Visitors to the
site
currently see an explanation that suggests to us that the
take-over by Rupert Murdoch's New Corporation this time last year
didn't help much with MySpace's disaster-recovering planning.
The un-dated and (we assume, deliberately) semi-literate notice says,
hey everyone! there's been
a power outage in our data center. we're in
the process of fixing it right now, so sit tight. hopefully we'll be
back online within the hour. its 6:40pm PST now. wanna place a
bet?
-Tom
Trouble is, 6:40pm PST is 4:40 GMT - over nine hours ago (presuming the
message has been updated since the problem started) - so what's really
going on is anyone's guess
Oh, and if you feel like a burst of PacMan once MySpace comes back on
line, check out the various gaming options on
The
PacMan Website.
Update - 14:40
The site if finally back up again (thanks to forumite Steve B for the
heads-up)! On the downside, that rather good game of PacMan is no
longer available on MySpace. Fortunately, that version of
PacMan is, we think, accessible directly in Shockwave format
from
this
page on The PacMan Website.

Nah!
If I was a genius, I'd have pressed Ctrl+F5 *before *publishing the article, rather than *after *reading your posting!

Am i the only person that doesn't understand these social networking sites?
Sure the whole MySpace band page thing is good (me cousins band has an entry http://www.myspace.com/thephantombandpage). but i really just don't understand the appeal.
i'm getting old perhaps?
In real terms, how different are they from, say, the HEXUS.community?
They have a different and wider appeal that a technology-related site such as HEXUS but, essentially, isn't it just people socialising about things they're interested in?
Or is it ME that doesn't understand them?

Unusually, you miss the point. Well, two of them, actually.
First, in my comment, I wasn't talking about what they physically provide but what they provide, if you like, spiritually.
By that I'm talking about how such sites provide companionship and social interaction in just the same way as the HEXUS.community does.
Second - I'd included the Wikipedia link in the original.Quote
(sorry, missed the link, my bad)Quote
