The news
Although it looks like a
pair of ultra-cool shades, PDT's appropriately-named Eye-Theatre is
actually a wearable virtual display for watching movies held
on portables such as Apple's video iPod.
The device, £150 including VAT and delivery and due
to start shipping in October, is said
to support video in PAL, NTSC and SECAM. It uses a pair of 4:3 format
TFT LCDs and, despite having a resolution of 320 x 240, is claimed to
be
equivalent to watching a 50in screen from 2.5m (8ft)
away.
Eye-Theatre has two parts. There's the spectacles
element, of
course, and that's reckoned to weigh 78g (2.75oz).
Then
there's an external 50g (1.75oz) lithium-ion battery pack said
to be good
for up to eight hours' viewing. This measures 38(w) x
98(h)
x11.5(d) mm - 1.5 x 3.9 x 0.47in - and recharges from
a USB
port using a cable that's supplied in-pack.
PDT says that "high-quality" stereo earphones are
incorporated and that Eye-Theatre comes with choice
of
nose-pieces to fit "every face from
children to adults".
Other points to note from PDT's specs include a contrast ratio of
200:1, 25-degree (diagonal - que?) viewing angle
and maximum
power consumption of 430mW.
