UK supermarket giant Tesco is to start selling "low-cost", own-brand software this month - on the web and in 100 stores. The six-strong initial line-up will take in two security/antivirus apps; a personal finance tool; a "complete" office suite; a CD/DVD burning program; and a photo-editing package. If things go according to plan, the range will be extended over the coming 12 months and stocked in far more stores.

The own-brand software introductions follow Tesco's extended move into computer hardware earlier this year and are a response of sorts to the company's inability to legally sell big-name software brands at knock-down prices because of EU rulings against the sale of grey imports.

Names of the software packages and exact prices have yet to be revealed. But what is known is that the apps are being supplied by the "white-labelling" division of Formjet. That company, which also designed the newly-created TescoSoftware.com web site, will provide a range of other services.

Formjet will run and maintain the web site - from where it will deliver customer support - and also keep web site and stores stocked. That arrangement, presumably, gives Tesco a relatively safe way of dipping its toe into the own-brand software water - with a minimum of work and investment.
