The news
Apple Inc (the renamed Apple Computer) and the Beatles' Apple Corps Ltd have kissed and made up, with the music legends dropping their trademark lawsuit - according to a statement issued this week by the iPod and Mac computer maker.
The settling of difference is no surprise. It was clearly on the cards in early January when Apple Inc CEO Steve Jobs played a Beatles tune on an iPhone during the product's unveiling at San Francisco Macworld Expo and said nice things about the group.
Logically, the next step will be an early announcement that the Apple iTunes Store is starting at last to offer original Beatles songs for download.
That change would likely produce a massive short-term income-boost for both Apples, add a steady cash flow into both treasure chests and possibly attract a new class of iPod user to the iTunes Store.
Details of the agreement that's been reached have not been made public.
The top and bottom of what Apple says is that, in effect, it's bought from Apple Corps all of the trademarks related to Apple and will lease back some of them for use by the Beatles' company.
