The news

Sony has at last unveiled its long-expected range of CompactFlash memory. This has been on the cards (groan!) since last summer's launch of the company's first digital SLR camera, the DSLR-A100, despite Sony being the name behind the competing MemoryStick standard.

There will be two families of Sony-branded CompactFlash card coming available in May, each carrying a five-year guarantee.

One series consists of cards with transfer speeds of 66x and available in capacities of 1GB, 2GB and 4GB. The other is made up of a pair of faster, 133x, cards - a 2GB and a 4GB.

There are no clues yet on pricing but what is known is that the faster cards will, of course, cost more than the slower ones. As well as additional speed, the extra will buys support from what Sony describes as its own image-recovery service.
