July
sees the introduction by Sony of what's
claimed will be the world's smallest and lightest consumer
high-definition camcorder, the HDR-CX6EK, weighing in at just
370g and using Memory Stick for storage. Naturally,
recording time is limited by the size of Memory Stick used. The CX6EK
records ADVC 1080i video files
and stills at 6.1 Megapixels. At the highest quality
setting video setting, it can record 15m with a 2GB stick
and one hour with 8GB. At the lowest quality setting,
recording times are 45m (2GB) and 2hr 55m (8GB).
Before
this model arrives, though, Sony will be adding a trio of
hard-disc-recording ADVC camcorders in June, topped by a 100GB
offering, the HDR-SR8E.
This
is reckoned to be able to capture 13h 30m at its
highest-quality recording setting and 38h 10m at its lowest.
Its
companion HDD camcorders are the 60GB HDR-SR7E and 40GB
HDR-SR5E.
As yet, Sony has given no indication
of the likely prices of any of the new models .
