about HEXUS.lifestyle

Behind HEXUS.lifestyle was one simple idea. To create a web site explaining clearly how best to use and enjoy - at home and on the move – all the digital media available now and in the near future.

The world of digital media is a big and exciting place. Much of that excitement is because, at last, there is a real coming together of computers and home networks with TV sets, hi-fi systems, DVD recorders and other consumer electronics products.

It's a fast-changing world and we'll be covering it in depth – without leaving you out of your depth. We'll have tutorials, features and reviews, as well as hot news - about still images, music, video, DVD and TV.

We'll also be covering the new goodies that will be the norm in a few years time and are becoming available right now. The list takes in high-definition TV and DVD, along with TV delivered over the internet to computers and mobile phones and other portable devices. It also includes the delivery to home TV sets of the internet and other new interactive services.

We're backing it all up with free HEXUS.lifestyle interactive forums running around the clock. These are a great way to help one another by sharing knowledge (and pain). HEXUS's own experts will be there, too, to help out. The forums are also the place to tell us what you like and don't like about how we're doing things.

That's the theory but now for some concrete examples. One of our many upcoming tutorial series is about something that millions of people want to do – transfer their collections of favourite VHS tapes onto DVD - and we'll show you how to get the best results most easily.

The simplest and easy way to do this uses a video recorder fed into a set-top DVD recorder. And that will be the best way if what you're transferring are films or TV programmes that need little or not editing.

But you'll have to use a computer if you want to edit the footage to any extent or want the DVDs to have great-looking menus, library cases and disc faces – and we'll show you how to create those, too.

It's now possible to enjoy on your living room TV set and AV system all the music, stills and video stored on every personal computer in the house. And, we'll walk you through doing it.

As we'll show, there's no need to bring all the PCs near to the TV set – though you may want to have a quiet, discreet media PC alongside - and no need to have wires trailing everywhere. In the same series, we'll also show how to get reception of your Sky box or Freeview box in any room you want it.

In digital media, probably the area of widest interest today is still images – whether created on digital cameras, mobile phones, PDAs or camcorders; or produced by scanning slides, negatives or printed photos.

We'll be running many projects on how to make the best of your stills, and will be doing much the same for video – whether shot on a camcorder, a stills camera, a phone, or downloaded over the net or recorded off-air.

The editor of HEXUS.lifestyle is Bob Crabtree, who is also the editorial director of HEXUS-affiliate DVdoctor.net and founder and long-time editor of Computer Video magazine. Under Bob’s leadership, CV quickly established a reputation for editorial integrity and thoroughness – traits that are common today across all HEXUS channels.
