Philips certainly managed to turn a few heads with its Cinema 21:9 TV, a set it claims is the first to feature an ultra-wide movie-format display. As desirable as it is, Philips had originally decided not to disclose the all-important details; pricing and availability.

As it turns out, it had good reason to wait. This giant 56in monster will reach UK shores in June '09 carrying a lofty price tag of Ā£3,500.

The screen, pictured above with its glorious 21:9 aspect ratio, ensures widescreen movies fill the entire screen without the annoyance of black bars. According to Philips, it'll finally allow for viewers to enjoy movies "as the director intended".

It's a tantalising option for a dedicated cinema room, but will the Cinema 21:9's image quality warrant the asking price? That remains to be seen, and in today's economy, this is a genuinely interesting TV that might suffer the same fate as Pioneer's high-end Kuro.

Huh?.. Hollywood hasn't even gotten 16:9 right, half the TV shows are really aired at 4:3, what the hell is the point in getting a 21:9 ratio display if *nobody* is producing footage at that ratio?
Don't worry this will be dead product very shortly.

Aww… Am I the only one that liked the Ambi-light system ?

Anyone recall the AmBX system for the PC as well - whatever happened to that as it launched with a bang and then sort of just went a bit awol.

I like Ambilight too. Not enough to warrant buying a new TV mind!

Far Cry 2 has AmBX support, but I've never seen any other games specifically design for/endorse it. In a way it's a shame as I like the idea of it, but it's just too expensive for a novelty.

And therein lies the problem. I all for shiny things but, like you, i wasn't thinking “hey great feature, here's a thousand quid” :)
