Despite having launched in 2006, the availability of HD content on Virgin Media's V+ service has been limited to say the least.
Up until now, Virgin Media's HD programming has relied heavily on-demand content, including catch-up services such as BBC iPlayer. Fortunately for viewers who crave the improved quality of high-def footage, the cable broadcaster recently announced that it would launch four new HD channels by the end of the month - including MTV HD, LIVING HD, FX HD and National Geographic HD.
As it turns out, that announcement was merely the beginning of high-def festivities and the flood gates appear to have been opened. Earlier today, Virgin announced that ESPN HD would become available in August, and just hours later it is now announcing that Channel 4HD will also join its HD line up.
4HD, a simulcast of Channel 4, will show a proportion of its programmes in the HD format - including the likes of Ugly Betty, Shameless, Come Dine With Me and various movies.
The channel will become the second free-to-view HD service offered to Virgin Media's TV customers, joining the existing BBC HD channel. Furthermore, Virgin Media's entire range of HD channels will be offered at no additional charge to subscribers of the XL TV package.
