Virgin Media has this week continued the rapid growth of available HD channels by announcing that the Sci Fi HD channel will be made available to its digital TV viewers.

Sci Fi HD, already available via rival provider Sky and scheduled to be rebranded as SyFy on April 13th, will become the sixth new HD channel added to Virgin Media TV in 2010.

Available at no additional cost to Virgin's XL TV subscribers, SyFy will join C4HD, BBC HD, ESPN HD, FX HD, MTV HD, National Geographic HD and LIVING HD. ITV1 HD, Eurosport HD, Discovery HD, Film4 HD and E4 HD are also scheduled to become available in the coming months as both Sky and Virgin compete to offer the definitive high-def experience.

CES may have suggested that 3D TV would be big in 2010, but as far as UK viewers are concerned, it's high-definition that continues to gather pace.

Freeview HD is destined to bring high-definition programming to the masses in just a matter of months, and subscription-based broadcasters continue to vie for HD supremacy with the addition of new channels.

BSkyB recently announced that its premium Sky+HD service is on track to reach 50 HD channels by Christmas 2010, whilst Virgin Media states that SyFy HD is the "sixth new HD channel announced this year with more to come".
